About The Law Institute

Our Story

The Law Institute was established in 2008 by two highly esteemed lawyers with extensive practical experience in Ghana's legal landscape. As senior partners they had unique insights into the gaps in legal education and training in the country.

The Vision Behind TLI

Through years of practice, the founders observed critical challenges that inspired them to create a revolutionary approach to legal education:

The Problem They Identified

  • Undertrained Personnel: Non-legal staff in legal and compliance environments were entering the field without any formal training, relying entirely on inadequate on-the-job learning

  • Missed Opportunities: Critical deadlines were being missed due to lack of proper legal knowledge and procedures training

  • SME Struggles: Small and Medium Enterprises were falling into compliance risks and governance challenges that threatened their very existence and growth potential

  • Limited Access: Legal solutions were concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural communities and smaller businesses without affordable legal guidance

Their Solution

Recognizing that Ghana's vision of becoming a middle-income country depended heavily on the growth of Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs), they understood that these businesses needed accessible legal knowledge to thrive.

The founders realized that while accounting and management training were readily available through various institutions and consultancies, legal information remained locked away in formal academic institutions, creating a serious developmental gap in the economy.

The Foundation

The Law Institute began as the Vocational Law Training Facility, initially operating as a division of MPAC, now MPOBB. This strategic beginning allowed TLI to leverage the extensive resources and practical experience of one of Ghana's most respected law firms while maintaining focus on its unique educational mission.

Our Founding Principles

From its inception in 2008, TLI was built on the belief that legal knowledge should not be the exclusive domain of formal academic institutions. The founders envisioned a vocational law program that would:

  • Bridge the gap between theoretical legal education and practical market needs

  • Provide career development opportunities for non-legal professionals

  • Support entry-level competence building in legal environments

  • Align with national development goals including the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS), and Private Sector Development Strategy (PSDS)

  • Meet international labour standards for vocational training
